Connect Dropbox

Last updated

Connecting Dropbox lets your Modules find a file, read a text file, and save new notes or summaries. Everything runs through an app you create in your own Dropbox developer account, so your credentials stay yours.

What your Modules can do

  • Search your Dropbox by file name or content.
  • Read a plain-text file such as .txt, .md, .csv or .json.
  • Save a new text file, optionally in a folder. Raileon holds each new file for your approval first.

Your Modules cannot overwrite, edit, move, share or delete a file. If a new file has the same name as an existing one, Dropbox renames the new one. They also cannot read Word files, PDFs or images, and very long files are cut short.

Before you start

You need a Dropbox account and permission to create an app in the Dropbox App Console. If your Dropbox belongs to a team, the team admin may need to allow apps.

Connect Dropbox

  1. Open Apps

In your dashboard, go to Apps in the left sidebar and select Connect on the Dropbox card.

  2. Create the app

In the App Console, select Create app. Choose Scoped access, then Full Dropbox so your Modules can reach all your files. Choose App folder instead if you want them kept inside one folder. Give the app a name.

  3. Turn on the permissions

Open the app's Permissions tab and tick files.metadata.read, files.content.read and files.content.write, then select Submit. Do this before you connect, because Dropbox only grants permissions that are ticked here.

  4. Add the redirect URI

On the Settings tab, paste the redirect URI Raileon shows under Redirect URIs and select Add.

  5. Paste the app key and secret

Copy the App key and App secret from the Settings tab into Raileon and select Save & connect. They are stored encrypted and used only to connect your account.

  6. Approve in Dropbox

Sign in to Dropbox, review the access and select Allow. The card shows Connected.

Good to know

  • A new Dropbox app starts in development status. That is fine for your own use, so you do not need to apply for production.
  • With a Full Dropbox app, Raileon can reach every file in your Dropbox. It cannot be limited to one folder.
  • Because a new file waits for your approval, you see its name, folder and text before it is saved.

Disconnect Dropbox

Open Apps, find the Dropbox card, and select Disconnect. To remove access on Dropbox's side too, open your Dropbox Settings → Connected apps and select Disconnect next to your app.
