Connect Box

Last updated

Connecting Box lets your Modules find a file, read what is in it, and save new notes or summaries. Everything runs through an app you create in your own Box developer console, so your credentials stay yours.

What your Modules can do

  • Search your Box by file name or by the words inside a file.
  • Read the text of a Word file, a PDF or a plain-text file. Box extracts the text itself.
  • Save a new text file, optionally in a folder. Raileon holds each new file for your approval first.

Your Modules cannot overwrite, edit, move, share or delete a file. If a new file has the same name as an existing one, Box refuses it and the Module picks another name. They cannot read images, and very long files are cut short. A file uploaded in the last minute may not have its text ready yet.

Before you start

You need a Box account and access to the Box Developer Console. If your company runs Box with admins, an admin may need to authorize the app after you create it.

Connect Box

  1. Open Apps

In your dashboard, go to Apps in the left sidebar and select Connect on the Box card.

  2. Create the app

In the Developer Console, select Create Platform App, choose Custom App, then User Authentication (OAuth 2.0). Give the app a name.

  3. Add the redirect URI

On the app's Configuration tab, paste the redirect URI Raileon shows under OAuth 2.0 Redirect URI. It must match exactly.

  4. Turn on the two permissions

On the same tab, under Application Scopes, tick Read all files and folders stored in Box and Write all files and folders stored in Box, then select Save Changes. Box takes permissions from here rather than from the sign-in screen, so do this before you connect.

  5. Paste the client ID and secret

Under OAuth 2.0 Credentials, copy the Client ID and Client Secret into Raileon and select Save & connect. They are stored encrypted and used only to connect your account.

  6. Approve in Box

Sign in to Box and select Grant access to Box. If Box says an admin must approve the app, ask your Box admin to authorize it under Admin Console → Apps → Custom Apps Manager, then connect again. The card shows Connected.

Good to know

  • Raileon can reach every file the connecting Box user can. It cannot be limited to one folder.
  • Box connections that go unused for 60 days expire. Raileon refreshes the connection regularly to keep it alive, and the card tells you if you need to connect again.
  • Because a new file waits for your approval, you see its name, folder and text before it is saved.

Disconnect Box

Open Apps, find the Box card, and select Disconnect. To remove access on Box's side too, open your Box Account Settings → Integrations → Apps and remove the app.
