Connect Buffer

Last updated

Connecting Buffer lets your Modules see the social channels in your Buffer account and add a post to a channel's queue. You create an API key in Buffer and paste it into Raileon. Raileon keeps it encrypted.

What your Modules can do

  • List the channels connected to your Buffer account, with the network each one posts to.
  • Add a plain-text post to a channel's queue. Buffer then publishes it at the next free slot in that channel's posting schedule. Your Modules do not use "share now", and they do not set a custom time.

Every post waits for your approval, every time. The approval shows the exact text, the channel and its network, and says the post goes into the queue. These come from Buffer, not from the Module. Nothing is queued until you approve.

What your Modules can't do

  • Share a post immediately, edit or delete a post, or change your schedule.
  • Attach images or video. Posts are text only.
  • Connect or disconnect channels in Buffer.

Before you start

You need a Buffer account with at least one channel connected, and a posting schedule set on that channel, because the queue uses it. The Buffer API is included on every Buffer plan. The key reaches every channel on your account, so connect it only if that is what you want your Modules to work with.

Create your API key

  1. In Buffer, open the API page in your account settings, or go to buffer.com/developer-api.
  2. Create a new key and copy it. Each plan allows a limited number of keys.

Connect Buffer

  1. Open Apps

In your dashboard, go to Apps in the left sidebar and select Connect on the Buffer card.

  2. Paste the key

Paste the API key and select Test connection. Raileon asks Buffer whether the key works.

  3. Save

Save. The card then shows Connected.

Disconnect Buffer

Open Apps, find the Buffer card, and select Disconnect. To be thorough, also delete the key in Buffer's API settings.

If it stops working

If a Module says Buffer rejected the key, create a new key and paste it again. Buffer limits how many requests a key can make in a day, and a Module will tell you when it has reached the limit.
