5 tips for naming your real estate company or team

  1. Brokerage names go on the license. If you're opening a brokerage, your state's real estate commission or licensing office registers the name, and it usually has to match your state business filing. Check both before you order signs.
  2. Team names have their own rules. Several states require the word "Team" (some also allow "Group"), some don't allow words like "Realty" in a team name, and your brokerage's name usually has to appear in your ads. Check your state's rules before you pick one.
  3. Leave REALTOR out of the name. REALTOR is a membership mark owned by the National Association of REALTORS, and its rules don't allow it as part of a business name. Use "Realty", "Properties" or "Real Estate" instead.
  4. Keep the name about the work and the property. Words about keys, doors, roofs, land and service are a good fit. Words that describe a type of person can cause Fair Housing problems, so leave them out of the name, the tagline and your ads.
  5. Think about the yard sign. Your name sits on signs, sign riders and listing sites where space is tight. A short name in big letters is easier to read from a passing car.
