5 tips for naming your photography business
- Decide if you are the brand. Clients often hire a photographer, not a company, so your own name works well for weddings and portraits. A studio name is easier if you plan to add second shooters or sell the business one day.
- Pair a photo word with a surprise. Light, lens, shutter and frame show up in a lot of studio names. Pairing one with an unexpected word, like Halo and Grain or Focal Fern, makes the name yours and makes an open .com easier to find.
- Keep the niche in the tagline. If you shoot weddings today but may add headshots or brand work, leave "Weddings" out of the name and put it in the tagline, where you can change it.
- Picture it as a watermark. Your name will sit in the corner of every photo you deliver. A short name, or one that makes a clean two-letter monogram, looks better there and on your logo.
- Grab the matching handle. Many clients find photographers on Instagram. Before you register the .com, check that the same name is open as a handle so your links match.
