LLC name ideas, plus the rules your LLC name must follow
The rules an LLC name must follow, with Florida as the worked example, plus 18 original LLC name ideas by style, each with its .com checked.

An LLC name does two jobs. It's the legal name your state keeps on file, and often the name your customers see. The state only cares about the first job, and it has rules for it.
Part 1 covers those rules, using Florida's law as the worked example. Part 2 gives 18 original LLC name ideas, sorted by style, each with its .com checked. Want suggestions built from your own words? Our free domain name generator shows which names have the .com available as you go.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules differ from state to state, and a business attorney can confirm a name before you file.
Part 1: What are the rules for naming an LLC?
Each state writes its own. The SBA says each state may have different rules about what your entity name can be and usage of company suffixes, and that most states don't allow you to register a name someone else has already registered. Florida's rules sit in section 605.0112 of the Florida Statutes, and here's how they work.
1. Does the name have to say "LLC"?
In Florida, yes. The name must contain the words "limited liability company" or the abbreviation "L.L.C." or "LLC", so it's clear the business is an LLC and not a person, a partnership or a corporation. "Oyster Bend Properties LLC" works, and so does "Oyster Bend Properties, Limited Liability Company".
A professional LLC formed in Florida since 2014 uses "professional limited liability company", "P.L.L.C." or "PLLC" instead, under section 621.12.
2. Is your name different enough from the names on record?
Florida requires an LLC name to be distinguishable in the Department of State's records from the names of other entities and filings on file. Small changes don't count. Under section 605.0112, a name is not distinguishable if the only difference is one of these:
| Only difference | Name on file (made-up) | Name you want | Distinguishable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A suffix | Long Pond Logistics Inc. | Long Pond Logistics LLC | No |
| An article ("The", "A", "An") | Sevenpine Holdings LLC | The Sevenpine Holdings LLC | No |
| "and" or "&" | Barlow and Keene LLC | Barlow & Keene LLC | No |
| Singular, plural or possessive | Halcourt Holding LLC | Halcourt Holdings LLC | No |
| Punctuation or a symbol | Tideanvil Fabrication LLC | Tideanvil Fabrication, LLC | No |
Three more points from the same section:
- Consent: the other entity can give written consent to a similar name, filed with the state when you register, as long as the two names aren't identical.
- What's not compared: fictitious names (DBAs), general partnership registrations and limited liability partnership statements are left out of this check. So a matching DBA won't show up as a conflict here. Search for it anyway.
- Filing isn't ownership: the name is filed for public notice only, and filing alone creates no presumption of ownership beyond what common law creates. A federal trademark is separate, so search the USPTO trademark database as well.
3. Which words can't an LLC name use?
Section 605.0112 rules out a name that states or implies:
- a purpose other than one the LLC law and the LLC's articles of organization allow, or
- a connection with a state or federal government body, or with a corporation or other entity chartered under the laws of the United States.
Banking words are restricted too. Under section 655.922, only an authorized financial institution may do business under a name with "bank", "banc", "banco", "banque", "banker", "banking", "trust company", "savings and loan association", "savings bank" or "credit union" in it, or words of similar import. The few exceptions include holding companies of a financial institution.
Other states keep their own lists, so check with your state's filing office.
4. How do you check the state registry?
Search before you file. In Florida, use the Division of Corporations' search by entity name on Sunbiz. Search the distinctive words on their own, without "LLC", and try singular and plural forms, since those differences don't count. Our guide to the Florida business name search walks through Sunbiz step by step.
In another state, find your filing office through the SBA's register your business guide and its state lookup.
5. Trading under another name? Register it
If your LLC will do business under anything other than its exact legal name, such as "Oyster Bend" without "Properties LLC", or a separate brand, that's a DBA ("doing business as"). Florida calls it a fictitious name: any name under which a person transacts business in this state, other than the person's legal name. The Fictitious Name Act says you may not do business under one until you register it with the Division of Corporations, and the registration includes a certification that the name was advertised at least once in a newspaper in the county where your main place of business is. Our post on registering a fictitious name in Florida has the steps.
Elsewhere, the SBA says most states require you to register your DBA if you use one, and that a DBA registration doesn't provide legal protection by itself.

FAQ
Does my LLC name have to include "LLC"?
In Florida, yes. The name must contain "limited liability company", "L.L.C." or "LLC". Other states set their own rules about endings, so check with your state's filing office before you file.
Can two LLCs have the same name?
Not in Florida. A new LLC name must be distinguishable from the names already on file, and adding "The", swapping "and" for "&", making a word plural or changing punctuation doesn't count. The SBA says most states don't allow you to register a name someone else has already registered.
Does registering my LLC name mean I own it?
Not by itself. Florida's law says an LLC name is filed for public notice only and creates no presumption of ownership beyond common law. A federal trademark is a separate process with the USPTO.
Can my LLC do business under a different name?
Yes, once you register that name. In Florida it's a fictitious name registration with the Division of Corporations, which the law requires before you do business under the name. The SBA says most states require you to register a DBA if you use one.
